brussel sprouts for breakfast

i love all brassicas:  the family of plants that includes kale, broccoli, cabbage, turnips and my breakfast today. the farm is in transition now from winter to spring production, so green foods are hard to come by. having resigned myself to roots (delicious turnips and rutabagas are still stowed away safely in their underground home) it is hard to describle my joy when we discovered the long ago abandoned brussel sprout bed had produced fruits. this is a crop we have never succeeded in growing, and with no expectation of a crop this year, we never even protected it from winter’s harsh frosts. folks, these delicate baby cabbages steamed with a pat of butter are divine on this february morning. i promise, next year, this crop is not going to be forgotten!
